Reality Tube

Wow...spring is a whirlwind of activity around here with soccer almost every week night, volunteering at school, garage sales every weekend (yay!) and the other miscellaneous goings of of what we call life.

Big season finales are upon us...my faves are the reality ones. Terribly disappointed that Terry didn't win Survivor last night. Looking forward to watching Amazing Race later in the week.

My kids and I only have one thing to say....GO HIPPIES!!!!!!!!!! LOVE those guys. I hope they end up with some kind of travel show of their own. My boys have noticed how they really enjoy life and are so kind to everyone they meet in their travels. Real life role models...I think they totally ROCK! And they wear vintage, so I like them even more for that!

GO HIPPIES!!

Signs of Spring...

...have been rampant in our yard!!

Sighting #1 - The 3 white tailed deer in our backyard. I might mention that I live in a city of almost 1 million people, so this is a very nice thing to see around here. The deer scared the crap out of the poor kids!! All they saw were these huge bodies jumping over the retaining wall coming at them!! They stayed, they pooped, they went (the deer, not the boys)!

Sighting #2 - The cutest chubby little mouse! Funny thing is the young cat next door had no idea what to do with it! Poor mouse was freaking out and the cat just played with it...well at one point she was carrying it around in her mouth, but no harm was done. The mousey must have 9 lives!!

Sighting #3 is actually something that we can only hear. We suspect we have a robin's nest in one of our chimneys. Luckily, it is not a fireplace we use! We have had robins in our yard for about 6 years in a row now...I see that they are getting creative!

April Fools Finds!!

My very favorite finds yesterday were this group of absolutely wonderful purses, each so different from the other!!! Love them! Don't know if I can keep though...space dictates that they will most likely be sold. Maybe it will get me motivated to clean out my purse closet to make room!!

Spring Rituals!

I can feel it in the air! The birds have been positively cheery, the gophers are running around in delight and the newspapers are full of church sales!! Every junk hunter eagerly awaits Spring when all the sales begin again...well for those of us who don't live in balmy year round sale conditions anyhow!

My "spidey senses" are tingling and I just can't wait to stand in line on those slightly chilly Spring mornings outside my favorite church sales, big cup of Timmy's in hand!

What will I find?????? You can rest assured I never come home empty handed! Stay tuned!!

Perfectly Pink in Jackie O Style!!

If I was the kind of girl that wore suits, this would be my absolute favorite for Spring!! The color is just the most perfect kind of pink. Such cute styling with a double breasted front and slightly oversized buttons. Just so darn sassy!! It can be found on ebay for a song!!

Am hoping our snow keeps on melting, cause I am just so over winter right now!!

Inspired

Life has been a whirlwind of researching schools and trying to figure out what is best for my 9 (almost 10) year old son. The wonderful world of vintage clothing has taken a backseat as my brain tries to process way too much information on schools and learning styles!!

Last night we went to an information meeting for a Fine Arts school. As I sat there and listened to the presentations given by the principal, students, teachers and parents, my eyes welled up...I knew that this was the place for my son!! It is heaven...a place where uniqueness is applauded, a place where the kids feel like they fit in, a place where you are encouraged to explore the arts and incorporate them into the core subjects, a place where everyone knows your name (or is that Cheers!!)

I wish we would have known about this wonderful school a year ago. It would be easier to get in at the Grade 4 level when the school begins. I will be calling for the application interview as soon as I finish typing this.

Of course, all the wonderful vintage stuff that I could never find a home for would now have one!!!!!

From Film to Fashion

I am sure that many of you fashion lovers are like me, and love to watch certain movies just to see the clothing!!

One of our VFG members Hollis of Past Perfect Vintage has written a fabulous article entitled From Film to Fashionon how costume designers in film have influenced our fashions of the times.

I promise you will just love some of the vintage clothing featured in her article. Simply delicious!!

One of my personal faves is Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn! I would love to hear some of yours!!

Va Va Voom!!

The color combination of pink and black is just so perfect!! One of my very faves, so I am having a hard time letting this fabulous 1950's halter dress go. But as I need shopping money for my upcoming Seattle trip with the girls, on the auction block it goes. I really hope it ends up making a trip to VLV or a swanky gala somewhere in this world cause it's a dress that has to be seen!

So I bring you my Top Five Reasons I love this dress!

1. Pink and black, duh!
2. Halter - my favorite style!
3. Shelf bust - can you say sexy!!!!!!
4. Beading - I have a thing for embellishment of any sort!
5. Full skirt - any chance to wear a huge crinoline and be ultra girly is a good thing!

Things That Make You Go Hmmmmmm....

Every once in a while in my vintage clothing selling career I come across an item that really makes me scratch my head. This jacket is one of those.

There are a ton of Ralph Lauren collectors out there! Yes, Ralph Lauren, not Jacques Fath, not Charles Worth, but good old Ralph!!

If anyone can shed some light on the popularity of cute bear sweaters and sometimes very tacky sports themed clothing items, I would love to hear from you!!

Revving the Shopping Engine...

...well for another month or so anyway. DH is the absolute best and surprised me with the plane ticket to go to Seattle with my bestest girls!!! Yippeeeee.

I had originally planned on going, then felt guilty about my Visa bill (accumlated over Christmas...ugh) so told the girls I couldn't join them. So sad, sometimes I am too practical.

On Valentine's Day he presented me with the ticket. Did I mention he rocks my world???????????

Can't wait to go to Seattle and drink lots of coffee, use an umbrella & wear a cute raincoat it rains like 2 days a year here so raingear is a novelty), throw a big fish and shop vintage and outlets. All with the best friends a girl could have.

The first weekend in April cannot come fast enough!!

Recycling

While in line at a store yesterday I overheard two late 50-ish women talking about a line of clothing they recently saw that was made from vintage clothes. Apparently the designer cut up vintage dresses and made them into pillows and new designs. It was the scariest thing I heard all day and it took all my energy to keep from screaming at these two ladies. In my humble opinion the ONLY time that this is okay, is when the fabric is ruined in a conspicious area beyond repair. We need to keep our ancestors clothing - they are little pieces of history and just as important as antique clocks and tables!!

So go ahead and save some vintage today!!!!

Bowled Over!

OMIGOSH!! This bowling dress offered on ebay by fellow Vintage Fashion Guild seller denisebrain is just the darn cutest thing I have seen in a while!! From the little bowling pin buttons to the removable dickie on the rear...it is so clever and stylish at the same time!!

Women used to look so put together!! Think of the effort it took just to go bowling...matching outfits with your hubby, nice white socks, cute shoes, snappy bowling bag, combed hair, makeup....egads some women don't even put that much effort into going out for dinner with their fave guy these days.

Yup, I'm swooning for the good old days!! I really wish some moms would be honest with their daughters and tell them that the sight of their belly hanging out of their pants just is not becoming to anyone. Kind of like those same mothers on American Idol that tell their kids that they can sing. What's up with that??

Anyhow, I just love this bowling dress and everything it stands for! Here's to looking like you put effort into life!

Junkhuntathon

Junk Hunter Girl and spousal side kick did a whirlwind out-of-town buying trip this past weekend!! What fun! We rented a car as there was a great deal here in town and ended up driving the 3 hour trip in a mile long Cadillac. So we drove through the destination city's worst neighborhoods in a big ole car with enough trunk space to fit...well everything I bought!!

Came home with bag fulls of vintage goodies...lots of lingerie and pretty things!! The most fun was a Suitcase Sale at one of the stores. You buy a suitcase ($9 garment bag in our case) and jam pack it with whatever you find. Not too much exciting vintage, but among someother oddities our family now has 4 matching lab coats which will make smashing Mad Scientist costumes this coming Halloween. Any good junk hunter knows that you must think ahead!!
